Vesterbro Alternative Christmas Tree

This year we were asked by the local community to build the 'Alternative' Christmas tree, situated in Enghaveparken for the whole of December. Over the last few years they have had various projects and organisations building trees using recycled and sustainable materials, that have integrated the whole community.

We have been working over the last month using bike generators and thought this would be a perfect place to try out what we have been doing. Our main focus was to create something that looks interesting, uses recycled materials that can be resued after the event, and is something that raises awareness of sustainability within the local community. The idea is simple, you pedal on the bikes and then different sections of lights are then lit up on the tree, although there is a strong element of working together to get the whole tree to shine!

We built presents with children from a local afterschool club to decorate the area inside the tree. They included mini scenes and lights that became the focus of our 'treasure hunt' during the light up event.
